Canada’s Minister of Immigration has announced that the issuance of Canadian temporary residence visas is going to decrease in the near future. He has asked Immigration Canada to review his plans.Programs that help attract foreign temporary workers and align them with the needs of the labor market. He also announced that Canada will set annual targets for temporary residents for the first time in the fall of 2023, as it has done for permanent residents.

The main goal of these changes is to reduce the issuance of temporary residence visas by 5% in the next three years. Canada’s temporary resident population is growing rapidly, reaching 2.5 million so far, which is 6.2% of Canada’s total population in 2023. As a starting point, Immigration Canada has set a goal of reducing the temporary resident population by 5% over the next three years.

The rules for Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) have changed. One of the announced changes is the reduction of the validity period of LMIA. From May 1, 2024, the validity period of LMIA will be reduced from one year to 6 months.
