Canada Immigration Department changes in 2024 for international students

Recently, Canada’s Minister of Immigration announced new plans to improve the situation of international students in Canada. Among these changes are a cost of living increase starting January 1, 2024 and the need for a Provincial Certificate of Incorporation (PAL) from a province or territory. However, international students intending to enter Canada have protested the recent changes to the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) and Spouse Work Permit. Extension of 30-hour work permit for international students

Immigration Minister Mark Miller has announced that he will extend the full-time work policy for eligible students until the end of April 2024. This decision is due to the needs of students who are currently working full-time and need to work more than 20 hours a week to cover their expenses. IRCC is also looking for alternatives and has considered increasing the weekly working hours of international students to 30 hours per week.

Extension of 30-hour work permit for international students

Former immigration minister Sean Fraser introduced a temporary policy to allow international students to study while meeting certain criteria for working more than 20 hours a week. These criteria are as follows until April 30, 2024:

– If the study permit application (or renewal) is received by October 7, 2022, and
– You are a full-time student at a DLI institution with a study permit and despite the expiration of your study permit, you have maintained your status and enrolled full-time in DLI classes,
You can work more than 20 hours a week outside the university.

– If the study permit application (or renewal) was received between October 8, 2022 and December 7, 2023, and
– You are a full-time student at DLI with a study permit and despite the expiration of your study permit, you have maintained your status and are enrolled full-time in DLI classes,
You can work more than 20 hours a week outside the university.

Any person who applied for a study permit or renewal after December 7, 2023 cannot work more than 20 hours.

Will Canada increase the working week for international students to 30 hours?

The new reforms announced by Immigration Minister Mark Miller are a bit harsh but will help everyone, including international students. In fact, Canada has set a cap on the number of international students per year and is reducing the number of temporary residents by restricting eligibility for Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWP) and Spousal Work Permits (SOWP). Therefore, the increase in working hours for international students from 20 to 30 hours seems to actually help to offset the overall decline in the number of post-graduation work permits and spousal freelance work permits to some extent.
